Pooka the Love Cat

Pooka was a stray born in a paper recycling plant on the Brooklyn waterfront, by the Manhattan Bridge. His Mom & family were accidentally killed in 2000 when he was only 4-5 days old. My girlfriend's gentle Rottweiler found him by a dumpster where the workers put him, tiny, hairless and eyes still closed. He spent his first 2 months backstage with me during the Broadway production of Jekyll & Hyde. The cast and crew helped take turns bottle feeding him and giving him kisses (he still loves kisses). He was 6.5 ounces when I got him (I weighed him on a food scale to monitor his growth) and he's now a 17 pound lover boy!

Pooka has esophillic granuloma complex and food allergies which led to asthma, all of which have been in remission for 4 years now thanks to a strict diet of only the healthiest grain free food (Innova brand canned food). I went through several vets all of whom were either unable to help or made things so much worse with their cortisone shots and pills. It took me nearly two years of testing his reactions to foods and tracking their ingredients to discover his grain allergies, especially wheat and corn.

Now that Pooka is 8 years old I have discovered that he is diabetic. Unfortunately we learned the hard way, he almost died of diabetic ketoacidosis in November of 2008. Apparently he has been diabetic for years but the strictly controlled diet kept him regulated and healthy. Now I have to be even more careful about his feeding schedule and give him insulin shots twice a day. Thank God he is doing great!

He thinks I'm his Momma, and follows me everywhere, I love my boy cat!

He supervises my research, cutting and draping

Collects all those pesky threads for me

And stares at me lovingly as I sew

Princess Pie

Sweet Pie passed away on 4/11/2007

Pie was my sweet little Alley Cat. I captured her in 1989 behind a Chinese food restaurant in Boston. She was a mean little thing and did not want to come home with me. After a little talk (a flea dip and claw cutting) we agreed that she would pretend to like me and I would give her anything she wants. Funny how such a mean little kitten can grow up to be the friendliest little tramp, she loved everyone.  She was my sweet snuggly little princess. I miss her terribly.
