Condition: Corset is new old stock with it's original paper label on the inside back. Though this corset was never worn it was stored poorly and has discolored greatly. The back has retained the original black color while the front has faded to a blue/green shade. Some tearing to the fabric and flossing on the upper left bust, bottom binding edge and trim on upper right bust. It also appears as if it has gotten wet at some point with some rust staining to the interior. See photos for details. Lacing is a new replacement. |
A classic late Victorian corset by C/B a la Spirite 32" bust / 21" waist Printed on the interior waistband: "C/B a la Spirite Awarded Gold Medals: Paris Exposition 1889, Chicago 1893."
Constructed with a total of 5 pattern pieces per side. Fabric is a layer of black cotton sateen over white cotton jean. Seams are sewn towards the outside and covered with the applied external bone casings. Corset has a 1" cotton waist tape held in place with stitching of the bone casings. 17 bones per side two of which are 1/2" wide side steels (not counting the 14 shorter bust bones). All boning is steel with the exception of the angled bust bones which are neither metallic or baleen (I believe they are likely reed or featherbone then). Decorative flossing is on both the upper and lower edges of the corset but on the front and sides only.
Center front length of 14.5" with a 13.5" dished busk. Center back length of 13.75" with 20 grommets per side evenly spaced at 5/8" apart.
