Condition: Corset appears to be new old stock and shows no signs of ever being worn. As with most black corsets of the period the thread has discolored with age to a brown color. Some very small specks of rust on the inside and an odd purplish discoloration on the interior of the left side. That is all. This corset is in amazing condition and appears flawless on the exterior. See photos for details. Lacing is a new replacement. |
A classic late Victorian corset (circa 1880s-1890s)31" bust / 22" waist Corset is un-marked and the maker is unknown
Constructed with a total of 7 pattern pieces per side. Fabric is a layer of black cotton sateen over white cotton jean. Seams are a combination of finishes. Some are flat felled towards the back of the corset and some are sewn to the exterior with a bone casing applied over it. Bone casings are applied to the exterior with one exception of a single channel sewn through both layers running mostly parallel to the busk. Corset does not have a cotton waist tape. 10 flat metal bones per side one of which is a heavier weight 1/2" wide side steel. A slightly unusual feature of this corset is that the decorative trim which is traditionally applied to the upper edge only has been applied to the lower edge as well.
Center front length of 15" with a 14" dished busk and pocket for an under busk. Center back length of 14" with 14 evenly spaced grommets per side. The decorative trim extends about 1/2" past the measurements I provide.
