"The Fasso" was a higher end brand of corset imported by the B. Altman department stores from the 1880s through early 1900s.
Corset is constructed of a single layer of figured silk with flat felled seams. Bone casings are applied to the inside and bones are in pairs. Flossing (embroidery) accents the end of each bone along the botton edge of the corset. 13 baleen bones per side including a single bone set within the first bust seam.
On this corset the grommets are set closer together than usual, 19 grommets per side set just 3/8" apart. Another unusual feature of this corset is how the 1" waist tape does not surround the entire waist line, it is applied across the back only.

An article in the New York Times on October 27, 1895 called "Trousseau for a Bride" describes in great detail the bridal garments and trousseau of Miss Consuelo Vanderbilt. She apparently wore a "Fasso" corset for her wedding. Her corset was of a slightly earlier style and likely fancier than the one I show above but it is most fascinating to read. Here is what it says about her corsets:
"With her wedding gown Miss Vanderbilt will wear a Fasso corset. It is of white brocaded satin in a carnation pattern. The clasps are like the clasps of an ordinary corset, except that in this instance they are of solid gold. There is a hook at the front to secure the skirts - a hook of ordinary style, but made of Roman gold in filigree work. The top of the corset is finished with Valenciennes lace, arranged in points. At the lower edge is a lace beading, through which is run white baby ribbon, which comes out in tiny bows here and there. there is a line of white plush down the steel inside of the corset. There are six other pairs of corsets, all trimmed with real Valenciennes lace. Two pairs are of figured white satin, and two pairs of white coutil. Two are of white batiste, one having small lavender flowers of embroidery and the other posies in white."
(I cannot imagine The New York Times of today running an article describing in such detail the wedding undergarments of any of our modern day socialites or celebrities.) |
