 Condition: Corset is discolored from the oils released from the baleen as is common. There is also some rust staining along the edges of the busk. I do not believe this corset has ever been washed as the coutil retains it's original starched stiffness. Back lacing is a replacement. |
A late Victorian corset with exquisite flossing details 31" bust / 21" waist Printed on the interior : "GARANTI BALEINE" (Guaranteed baleen in French)
Constructed with a total of 8 pattern pieces per side three of which are gores (two bust and one hip). Fabric is a double layer of thin cotton coutil cut with the grain running vertically. Boning is sandwiched between the two layers. Corset does not have a waist tape. 16 baleen bones per side three of which are shorter and angled at the upper back of the corset. Bust gores are each corded with two rows of five cords and there are two thin baleen bones running horizontally on the inside of each upper bust section. Exquisite two toned green/cream colored flossing secures most bones in their position. Scalloped embroidered trim is sewn along the top edge in a lovely mint green on cream cotton.
Center front length of 13.25" with a 12" dished busk. Center back length of 12.75" with 10 grommets per side spaced 1" apart with the two grommets at the waist being set closer together at 1/2" apart.
