Royal Worchester corset Style # 533 with an 18" waist.

One of my favorites, this little masterpiece is truly a work of art. Here's an interesting thing, this corset was a pretty inexpensive ($1.00) plain corset of cotton batiste. I am not sure why or how it became the beauty we now see. Perhaps a talented seamstress made it this elaborate by adding the lace, ribbons and embroidered details or maybe it was customized by the manufacturer Royal Worchester? The listing shown is from a 1907 Royal Worchester catalog.

I believe this corset was a lovely sky or robin's egg blue with cream but has faded into the grayish color we now see.

This corset is constructed of a single layer of cotton batiste with the grain of the fabric running horizontal around the body. Seam allowences are sewn towards the exterior and covered by the bone casings. Original silk ribbon laces and the same silk ribbons form the bone casings. I suspect there is a layer of something beneath the ribbon to help prevent the bones from popping through. All bones are baleen (whalebone) except for the busk and center back bones by the grommets. Edges are bias bound in cotton beneath the lace trimmings. Seven pattern pieces per side. A 10" busk closure within a 11" center front length and a 9.5" center back length (both not counting width of lace hanging past the edge). 12 grommets per side, aprox. 11/16" apart, evenly distributed. 1" wide inner waist tape reinforces the waist. Grommets and busk clasps are hand bound in a silk flossing using a button hole stitch. Lovely embroidery covers every inch of exposed cotton base. The original decorative silk ribbon pom pom for the center front is still intact.
