Late 1870s corset

Made by Thompson's corset company with a patent stamp of 1878. Tan cotton coutil with cream colored flossing and machine embroidery (I believe it to be machine due to the fact that the pattern does not mirror). The sprung steel spoon busk is dished (turns in towards the abdomen). This corset's waist measure was originally 35", it is currently a 33" waist.

This beautiful corset has had many alterations done to it over the years. I believe it to have been part of a theatre's stock. I have been trying to restore as much as I can. The main problem is that someone had removed the hardware from the spoon busk and sewn plackets with 18 beautiful glass buttons down the front (the logic of this adjustment escapes me). Many bones were shortened or removed and the sides were cut and bound, allowing the sides to be taken in easily. I have returned the sides to within 1" of their original position and removed the horrible button placket. I am searching for someone to help to restore the clasps onto the busk in their original positions, I haven't the equipment.

Honestly, this web site is a bit expensive.

If you found it helpful and would like to send a donation I would greatly appreciate any amount.
